What is On-Page SEO?

On-page SEO is the practice of optimizing individual web pages to rank higher and earn more relevant traffic in search engines.1 When SEO experts refer to “on-page”, we mean both the content and the HTML source code of the page that is being optimized contrasted with off-page SEO, which pertains to links and external factors.

If you are new to on-page optimization, or on-page SEO, the best thing to do is learn about the on-page ranking factors. On-page ranking factors for SEO are the factors that affect your site’s search and visibility. These can include things like title tags, meta descriptions, on-page content, internal links, URL structure, and more. When not optimized properly, on-page ranking factors can make a difference in your site’s ability to rank, with the biggest issue being the content of your page.

Just like all things SEO, on-page SEO is ever-changing, therefore keeping up with the latest best practices is just as important as other parts of your digital marketing strategy.

The current ranking factors for 2020 to focus on are as follows:

  • Content of page — does your page have good content to supply demand? Is this good content linkable?
  • Title tag — this is the second most important on-page factor. Make sure your title tags are up to par.
  • URL — do your URLs have the proper structure?
  • Image alt text — is your page ADA compliant? To find out why this matters, check out our blog Why Your Website Should Be ADA Compliant & How to Make It So

If you have not already started implanting these factors into your content or website, it is not too late. Make sure to be on the lookout for more changes in 2021.
