Google’s Penguin 4.0 is Officially Here

Google’s Gary Illyes warns SEO teams and website owners in regards to cleaning up their links as the release of Google’s Penguin 4.0 became official this month. Penguin 4.0 is an algorithm created by Google that works in real time to catch sites that are spamming search results to manipulate ranks, primarily by negotiations and buying links.

First released in 2012, Google’s Penguin targeted sites that spammed search results and created unnatural link patterns in ways that Google may have been unable to detect. Essentially, links created with the sole purpose of increasing your rank are penalized by Google. Once you are penalized, your website suffers a sharp drop in rankings, or specific pages become de-indexed.

There are a few unique features of Penguin 4.0, making this newest update more efficient than previous versions of Penguin. In earlier versions, Penguin would catch bad links, penalize your website, and penalized websites would only come out of internet “time-out” once Google ran the filter again, which in some cases, took years. Penguin 4.0 works in real time to re-crawl, re-index and re-assess pages, then immediately catches spam sites or frees them of their penalties.
