When the Friends Were Friends Before F.R.I.E.N.D.S. and the Emotional Effect of Social Media

Last week, Courteney Cox shared the ultimate throwback picture of the Friends cast before the show first aired in September 1994. If you’re a true Friends sitcom fan like we are, you’ll know the meaning behind the caption:

The one where the six of us went to Vegas and no one knew we were F.R.I.E.N.D.S yet

After 15 years since we said our last goodbye to Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, and Joey (and Gunther and Janice and the Ugly Naked Guy), this photo of familiar faces brought us nothing less than pure joy and fond memories of the six characters we bonded with for 10 seasons straight.

Legendary TV director James Burrows treated these strangers to a trip to Las Vegas because he “had a feeling about the show,” in an attempt to get them to bond before the show really took off.1 And boy, was he right.

The photo was re-posted and shared in “Stories” all over Instagram, and well-known celebrities came out of the woodworks to share their excitement in comments on the photo posted by Cox:

Look at that! Thanks again Jimmy Burrows. Love you Courteney – Lisa Kudrow, also known as Phoebe Buffay

This is TOO good! – Reese Witherspoon

Jim Burrows took the cast of Will & Grace to San Francisco for dinner on that plane during our first season! We were all freaking out. – Megan Mullally

Social media is an amazing platform with incredible potential, where even a photo of a photo can invoke great emotion from strangers all over the web. These types of emotions in social media are contagious. When someone laughs, we also want to laugh, right? Essentially, you want to share the emotion with your peers.

As a social media agency in Fort Lauderdale, we know that positive and happy content gets shared more than sad content. Negative emotions may hurt brand and product attitudes.2 Posting positivity on social media has a motivating effect on others to do the same. Cox shared the photo of the Friends before they were F.R.I.E.N.D.S to spread the happiness she feels when she sees the photo to her followers.
