Google Maps Expands Lime Scooter Location Tracking to Over 80 Cities

Starting in December 2018, Google Maps and Lime, the popular transportation rental company, teamed up to make it easier for users to find available Lime scooter rentals and e-bikes near them. The partnership allowed people using the transit option on Google Maps to locate Lime electric scooters, e-bikes, and pedal bikes in 13 cities.1

On March 3, Google announced that this feature would now be available in over 80 new cities in the U.S. and around the globe.2 Google Maps users in 23 international cities and more than 50 U.S. cities will be shown available Lime scooters and bicycles.

Once they click the app’s transit icon, users will be presented with a Lime option in addition to the usual available train and bus routes. The Google Maps app shows users the estimated time it will take them to walk to the Lime vehicle, the overall time it will take to get to their final destination, and an estimated rental cost.

If you do click on the Lime option, Google Maps will either redirect you to the Lime app or prompt you to download it if it’s not yet on your phone. Paying for Lime scooter rentals is done directly on the Lime app, rather than on Google Maps.

The Growing Popularity of Electrical Scooter Rentals

The popularity of electric scooter rentals has continued to increase as this specific sector of the ride-sharing industry has entered its second year.3 Supported in large part by the cities quickly embracing and formalizing the service, e-scooters and e-bikes are popping up in more and more cities.

A convenient way to travel short distances in urban areas, major scooter rental companies like Lime have hit tens of millions of rides within the first and second years of operation. At our Fort Lauderdale SEO company, Tandem Interactive, we’ve noticed Lime scooters are incredibly popular with both tourists and residents who use it to travel to and around the beach.

With major tech companies investing heavily in these polarizing ride-sharing services (Google’s parent company, Alphabet, invested in Lime last summer4), their rising popularity shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
