What is a Meta Description?

A meta description should be a short summary of what the page is about. They are short paragraphs that usually show up in SERPs under each suggested link for what you searched. If you have ever used Google, you have probably scanned through meta descriptions in order to determine which page will be the most helpful.

While less important for search engine optimization, meta descriptions are primarily for the readers and can influence whether or not people click on your webpage. A good meta description will entice a reader to click on the link leading back to your site rather than your competitor’s site. A little extra effort could be the difference between a sale and a missed opportunity.

There is no magic formula to writing the best meta description, but there are a few general rules and meta description examples to follow in order to capture the attention of your audience. It is important to note that Google will sometimes pull other parts of the webpage for the SERP, so it can be a bit of a toss-up.

It is important to throw some keywords in there, but avoid keyword stuffing, especially with so few characters. If we wrote a meta description for this post that said, “create the best meta descriptions with the help of the best meta description writers who have the best meta description examples, ” no one would click on it. It sounds way too spammy. Remember, meta descriptions are for your readers.

It is usually a good idea to include some call to action. Whether it is telling your reader exactly what they will get out of clicking on your page or telling them directly to “read more,” a call to action entices the reader to continue to your site.

Making sure your meta descriptions match the content of the page you are talking about is also important. Deceiving readers is a big no-no with Google.

 Meta Description Length

One big question we often get asked as a Florida SEO company is about meta description length. There is some debate as to the most appropriate meta description lengths. Google doubled the 165-character limit in December of 2017. Since then, Google may have changed its mind again and now looks for meta description lengths in between the two. A Google representative tweeted, “…there is no fixed length for snippets. Length varies based on what our systems deem to be most useful.” [1] The average now seems to be between 165 and about 320 characters.
