The Most Googled Halloween Costumes in 2019

Google has revealed the most searched Halloween costumes in 2019 and the list contains a mix of pop culture characters and trick-or-treating staples. On its new Frightgeist platform, what it calls a “GoogleTrends experiment,” users can see a list of the most googled Halloween costumes in 2019. Look at this year’s top Halloween costume ideas nationally and locally. It may help you get some inspiration as October 31st slowly approaches.

Are you looking to dress up your kids for trick-or-treating? Or are you trying to get your own costume for those crazy end-of-the-month Halloween parties? Either way, Google’s list is a useful resource. Here are just some of the most popular costumes you’ll likely be seeing this spooky season.

Clown It Up

On the list of the most searched Halloween Costumes in 2019, the number one spot went to IT. The terrifying child-eating and perpetually drooling monster clown in Stephen King’s infamous It novel. After getting a makeover and starring in two recent, highly-successful horror films – It (2017) and It: Chapter Two (2019) – many people want to dress up as the red-haired, white-faced, and yellow-eyed Pennywise. It seems a lot of us find clowns inherently frightening since Clown costumes were also near the top of the list.

DC Comics’ iconic villain Joker unsurprisingly made the list as well. There’s a movie in theaters right now all about him. Starring Joaquin Phoenix as the titular character, Joker (2019) seems to have inspired an equal amount of praise and controversy.1 Regardless of the noise, his popularity as a Halloween costume has been on the rise. Harley Quinn and Joker could even make a great couple’s costume, even though they’ve officially broken up (watch the Birds of Prey trailer!).

Be Your Own Superhero

The well-known filmmaker Martin Scorsese has recently argued that “theme park films”, otherwise known as superhero movies, are “not cinema” and are “invading” movie theaters.2 In addition to invading theaters, superheroes are also invading Google’s list of most-searched Halloween costumes in 2019. While the general term Superhero is on the list, Spider-Man is the most googled superpowered Halloween costume idea, landing in the top three.

With seven live-action movies dedicated to the web-shooting character, at least two reboots, and an incredibly successful video game, there are plenty of costumes to choose from. Stay loyal to the original films by dressing up as Tobey Maguire’s Spidey. Or embrace the MCU by dressing as Tom Holland’s friendly neighborhood Spider-Man (Iron Man tech included). Halloween is as good a time as any to celebrate the Disney and Sony divorce being postponed! 3

We haven’t even gotten to the Oscar-winning Into the Spider Verse (2018) which gave us so many Spidey variants to choose from – Air Jordan-wearing Miles Morales, ballerina-turned-hero Spider-Gwen, trench coat clad Spider-Man Noir, and even dad bod Peter Parker. Other superheroes that made the cut include DC classics Batman and Wonder Woman.

Stuck In a Fairytale

If you’re in a more mystical mood, remember that fairytales aren’t all about happy endings, they’ve got plenty of scary elements too. Child abductions, murderous huntsmen, and hair-raising monsters! Oh my!  Step into your very own bedtime story by dressing yourself or your kids up in one of these most searched Halloween costumes – Unicorn, Pirate, Princess, Mermaid, Vampire, Angel, Fairy, Dragon, Maleficent, or a character from Descendants (ask your kids).

The most popular fairytale-inspired costume was unsurprisingly Witch which took second place on the list of the most googled Halloween costumes in 2019. You can go the traditional route with the pointy hat, prosthetic hooked nose, drab black dress, and a broomstick. Go full The Wizard of Oz and bring out the green face paint.

Want to be a bit more stylish? Take inspiration from today’s growing community of witchcraft enthusiasts. The look is more millennial Wiccan than old crone. The book Basic Witches: How to Summon Success, Banish Drama, and Raise Hell with Your Coven is a good place to start! Or you can go full hipster (otherwise known as getting your A24 freak on!) and dress up as the characters from The VVitch (2015). It might make the perfect family costume (black goat optional).
