SEO Updates in November 2023

In this ever-evolving industry, there is always something new to learn. This goes for our SEO services as well. Below are just some of the interesting updates in SEO from the month of November.

  • Google could be testing new search refinement options: Google appears to be experimenting with a potential “Simple Search” feature designed to simplify search results for users seeking a more straightforward experience. The feature introduces a “+Topics” refinement button at the top of both mobile and desktop search results. Upon activation, it adjusts the search outcomes to present a different set of results. Notably, the ability to replicate this feature varies, with some users unable to do so on desktop or mobile, while others, like Dan, can. The purpose and functionality of the “Simple Search” feature remain speculative, prompting curiosity and speculation about its intended role in enhancing user search simplicity.1
  • Changes from the 2023 update in Google’s Search Quality Rater guidelines update: The recent updates to Google’s Search Quality Guidelines differ from past revisions, focusing more on user intent and meeting user needs rather than introducing significant new concepts. Google aims to refine what constitutes high-quality search results and enhance quality raters’ understanding of why some results are more helpful than others. This nuanced approach explains the volatility observed during core updates, as raters’ feedback influences substantial intent shifts. The guidelines now provide additional guidance for rating the quality of forum and Q&A pages, emphasizing the impact of comments on overall page quality. Google also highlights the importance of user location in understanding a query’s context, particularly for location-specific searches.2
  • The crawl rate limiter tool has been removed from Search Console by Google: Google has announced the discontinuation of the Search Console Crawl Rate Limiter Tool, set to be removed on January 8, 2024, citing advancements in crawling technology that have rendered the tool unnecessary. This tool, introduced in 2008, allowed publishers to manage Googlebot crawling to prevent server overload. However, with improved crawling algorithms, Google states that Googlebot can now automatically detect server capacity and adjust crawl rates accordingly. Going forward, the default minimum crawl rate will align with what publishers commonly request.3

PPC Updates in November 2023

In November, the field of Pay-Per-Click (PPC) saw several noteworthy updates develop, offering many useful insights. With some of the best PPC services in South Florida, we work to ensure our clients stay up to date on what is happening throughout the field. News and updates from our PPC specialists include:

  • 5 behavioral strategies to test for boosting search conversions: A successful search marketing strategy necessitates a central focus on customer experience. Even if customer experience isn’t within your direct purview, it should remain on your radar. Simply relying on traffic metrics is insufficient; the crucial aspect lies in how that traffic moves through the marketing funnel and translates into valuable customers. The article details five behavioral nudges for testing and increasing conversions, including social proof, cognitive load considerations, scarcity and FOMO tactics, loss aversion strategies, and anchoring techniques. Each strategy is presented with examples and insights, encouraging website owners to begin testing today for potentially significant impacts on conversion rates.4
  • Ways to find out if you’re paying too much for brand keywords: High costs for branded keywords can be addressed through careful consideration of match types, addition of negative keywords, defense against competitors’ bids, reassessment of bid strategy, and scrutiny of Quality Score. Ensure your advertising aligns with brand queries, add negatives to avoid unintended matches, defend against competitor bids, adjust bid strategy if needed, and maintain a high-quality Score. This concise guide provides solutions for managing and optimizing costs associated with branded keywords on Google Ads.5
  • What to know about Google Performance Max: Performance Max (PMax) has gained prominence in Google Ads, utilizing AI for automated ad creation and optimization across Google’s platforms like Search, Display, YouTube, and more. Launched in 2021, PMax operates based on specified conversion goals, employing Smart Bidding and machine learning models. Advertisers input bidding strategies and assets, benefiting from cross-platform reach, automated bidding, simplified management, advanced creative capabilities, and adaptiveness. PMax is suitable for brands with quick sales cycles, flexible budgets, and ample creative resources.6
  • Bid Strategies for Audience Ads Announced by Microsoft: Advertisers can now employ Maximize Conversions, aiming for the highest number of conversions within the budget, with options for Maximum CPC (Cost Per Click) and CPA (Cost Per Acquisition) limits. Another strategy is Target Cost Per Acquisition (TCPA), which focuses on maximizing conversions at the specified CPA target. It’s important to note that campaigns with fewer than 30 conversions in a month may experience some volatility as the system learns behaviors. These bid strategies, already in use for Search and Performance Max campaigns, demonstrate Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing conversion modeling and accuracy.7
  • Generative AI features rolled out by Google Ads: Google is enhancing its Performance Max ad platform with generative AI features to streamline the process of creating and customizing text and images for ads. This update is designed to simplify ad creation for marketers, offering more efficient tools while emphasizing the responsible use of AI technology. These generative AI features aim to empower marketers by providing innovative tools that not only enhance ad creation efficiency but also maintain a focus on responsible and ethical AI utilization.8

November 2023 Social Media Updates

Social media is a crucial function of digital marketing that involves keeping the client engaged on a first-hand basis. Below are a few updates that our social media team at Tandem has found this November.

  • Meta offers expanded access to content and library API: Meta is expanding access to its updated Content Library and API tools for researchers to study Facebook and Instagram content, aiming to uncover key usage trends and insights. The move follows Meta’s earlier restrictions on data access after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. The tools provide real-time access to public content, enabling researchers to analyze data from Facebook Pages, Posts, Groups, Events, and Instagram creator and business accounts.9
  • Meta looks at what drives Threads engagement: With the increasing popularity of Threads and businesses reevaluating their presence on X (formerly Twitter), the focus is on what works on Threads and how to optimize engagement. While Threads is still in development, Meta’s marketing director, Jacki Pimentel, emphasized the importance of conversation as a key element. Content that initiates conversations and prompts user responses tends to garner more engagement. Meta actively promotes positive engagement on Threads, diverging from the emotionally triggering content strategy seen on other platforms.10
  • More people are getting their news from TikTok, report indicates: The latest Pew Research overview reveals that Facebook remains the primary social media source for news among U.S. adults, although overall reliance on social apps for news is declining. Around half of U.S. adults get news from social media, with Facebook leading. However, the influence of most social platforms in this context is decreasing over time, except for Instagram and, notably, TikTok, which has seen a significant rise in news usage. Concerns about TikTok’s potential connection with the Chinese government and its influence on content trends persist, making the platform subject to potential bans in various regions.11
  • LinkedIn announces upcoming deletion of past carousel posts: LinkedIn is set to remove carousel posts, profile videos, and in-image linking options starting December 14th, 2023. This move will result in the deletion of previously posted carousels and the deactivation of in-image links. LinkedIn had initially announced these removals in June, citing limited user interest. Notably, carousels had gained popularity for generating engagement. Although LinkedIn added a native carousel posting option in July last year, users will have to resort to a workaround process to continue posting carousels.12
